Report from Europe

Our GEWEL Director, Kyoko Sakuma in Europe reports from one of our European advisors, Marianne E. Johnsen, X-ellence Group Partner in Norway!

The 2003 Act requires 487 public limited companies to increase their proportion of women on their boards to 40% by 31st December 2007.

Results:

  1. As of January 1st, 2008, 98% of the companies met the obligation, despite newspaper articles throughout 2007 reporting that Norwegian firms would face shut-down if they did not manage to find female directors.
  2. The percentage of women on the board was 6% in 2001, today increased to 37%.
  3. There was a silent and informal movement among a dozen of female directors to stay together and encourage/support each other to move into top positions.
  4. The key word for this informal movement was network and intimacy.

Related to the above, there are some movements in Belgium. The Flemish Government together with Guberna (Belgium Directors' Institute) launched a database creation for potential 'professional board member' female candidates in autumn 2007. This is to facilitate companies to consult and select competent female candidates into the board room.
